Abstrakt     The effect of combined treatment with pentoxifyllin and supervised training was compared to medical treatment alone in randomized cross-over study in patients with intermittent claudication. Thirty two patients were randomly assigned to two groups of 16 patients each, of wich group I first (8 weeks) received drug treatment only (pentoxifyllin 400 mg tid), and group II the combined treatment training + pentoxifyllin). During the second period of 8 weeks the patients were admitted to the reversed treatment. After the first period of 8 weeks the claudication distance increased by 18 m in group I (not significant in comparison to pretreatment value), and by 46 m in group II (p less th. 0.01). In the second period, both groups additionally improved their performance: group I, receiving at that time combined treatment, improved its claudication distance for 59 m (p less th. 0.05), while group II receiving only pentoxifyllin, improved for 32 m (p less th 0.05). The results showed that physical training was an important adjunct for medical treatment in patients with intermittent claudication and certainly superior to medical treatment alone.
