Abstrakt     The diagnostic value of transcutaneous oxygen tension was evaluated in patients with PAOD. The study ecompassed 4 groups of subjects: 10 healthy volunteers, 10 patients with heavy circulartory disturbances (stage III and IV), 9 diabetic patients without clinical manifestation of PAOD and 5 patients with claudication (stage II). Oxygen tension was determined by oxygen monitor (radiometer TCM3) on the dorsum the foot and on the anterolateral part of the calf (10 cm below the knee). In the first three groups the measurements were performed at rest in supine position. In the fourth group oxygen tension was in the foot 72.2 mm Hg and in the calf 84.2 mmHg. In patients with heavy circulatory disturbances the corresponding values were 9.4 mmHg and 42.2 mmHg. Patients with diabetes had also significantly decreased oxygen tension in the foot and calf (foot: 58.3 mmHg, calf: 67.9 mmHg) compared to healthy volunteers. In patients with claudication oxygen tension at rest was not significantly different from healthy volunteers but during exercise on treadmill significant decrease occurred. The decrease in oxygen tension was most pronounced at the end of exercise (at onset of pain) and immediately after stress test. We concluded that transcutaneous measurement of oxygen tension can be considered as a reproducible and accurate method giving insight into the degree of arterial circulatory disturbances and the measurement during stress test can help to detect subclinical stages of the disease. Key words: Transcuteaneous oximetry - Peripheral artery disease - Diabetics - Stress test.
