Abstrakt | Lyme borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe and the USA. It is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. It usually begins with erythema migrans, a ring-like skin lesion, which is the most important manifestation of the I. stage of Lyme borreliosis and-when typical-also the clinical hallmark of the disease. In some patients borrelias may spread from skin in blood or lymph to many sites. After a latent period neurologic, heart and-or joint involvement, rarely involvement of some other organ system may develope (stage II.). Late in the course of the illness (stage III.) joints, nervous system and skin are most commonly involved. As a rule individual patients doesn't have all major manifestations of the disease. Lyme borreliosis great range of presentation can make recognition difficult and differential diagnosis very board. Recognition of the disease is important because it enables antibiotic therapy which is very effective especially early in the course of the illness. | |
