Abstrakt     With the advent of more effective treatment of cancers and autoimmune diseases, organ transplantations and the onset of a new population infected with human immunodeficiency virus has led to an increasingly larger number of immunocompromised children. The incidence and pattern of the infections that occur parallel the targets of the immune system that are adversely affected or destroyed. The immunocompromised children are affected by exogenous and endogenous organisms; the former are less common. Some exogenous organisms can produce severe, atypical or prolonged infections which can recur and cause higher mortality than in immunologically healthy children. It is important to diagnose the infection in immunocompromised children as soon as possible to start treatment early and to prevent the spread of infections. The risk of acquiring exogenous infections can be minimized through preexposure active immunization with available vaccines, interruption of transmission of pathogens of infected patients and postexposure prophylaxis.
