Abstrakt     The backbone of symptomatic treatment of both gastric and dudedenal ulcers are antacids, i.e. salts of magnesium, aluminium and calcium. The treatment of peptic ulcer disease has been revolutionized by the discovery of histamine H2-receptor antagonist. Three histamine H2-receptor antagonist are widely available cilinically: cimetidine, rantidine and famotidine. Omeprazole is the best example of compounds inhibiting H+/K+-ATP-ase; it belongs to the group of proton pump inhibitors. Anticholinergic agents were widely used in treatment of either gastric or doudendal ulcer prior to H2-receptor antagonists. Recently, a new anticholinergic drug - pirenzepine, which is more selective, has been developed. The group of substances which are said to form a protective layer over gastric or duodenal ulcers consists of tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate andsucralfate. Prostaglandins could act by reducing gastric acid secretion or by increasing the mucoprotective index. Some of them: misoprostol, rosaprostol and enprostil have already been launched, while many of them are still in progress. It has been suggested that a reduction in the blood flow is an important factor in the formation of peptic ulcers responsible for its antiulcer activity. In the teraphy of ulcer disease psychotherapeutic agents also play an important role. The heterogeneity of possible treatment of ulcer is further evident from some other drugs of different origin and activity. Although there is a big competition in the teraphy of peptic ulcer, cimetidine remains one of the leading drugs.
