Abstrakt | Background. The goal of the present study was to devise a new test enabling objective assessment of the functional capacity of the neck (N) in patients with various forms of neuromuscular diseases (NMD). The new test should be reliable, easy to perform, and suitable for routine use. Methods. The test consists of 11 items which in turn break down into 41 separate assessments of each patient. Functional movements were assessed with respect to the range of an active movement as performed. The range of movements was assessed by visual estimation as well as by use of a goniometer. In assessing the quality of movement the temporal criterion was applied. Results. The test was applied to 248 patients with different forms of NMD and the functional state of the N of patients with different forms of disease was compared. The worst functional ability of the N has been found in patients with spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA2) and the best in patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN). Patients with HMSN are very homogeneous as a group, while all other groups are very heterogeneous, the most the group of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Conclusions. The test was properly assessed and has proven as feasible, acceptable and reliable. It enables an objective assessment of the functional state of the N in patients with different forms of NMD. | |
