Abstrakt     The incidence of postoperative complications can be reduced by perioperative administration ofo antibiotics. When deciding for antibiotic prophylaxis the risk factors must be assessed. We believe that antibiotic prevention is especially indicated in abdominal surgery in procedures, where massive bacterial contamination connot be avoided: in gastric and duodenal surgery in sub - or anacid conditions, in biliary tract surgery in cases where bactibilia is expected (acute cholecystitis, chronic cholecystitis in the advanced age, biliary obstruction, cholangitis), in appendicectomy and in obstruction of the smal bowel in cases of gangrenous changes, and always in colorectal surgery. Similarly, antibiotic prophylaxis is important in thoracic surgery in the presence of an open bronchus. Though septic complications are not as frequent in cardiovascular surgery, prevention is important because of the possibility of catastrophic sequelae.
