Abstrakt     The oxidative burst (OB) response in human polymorphonuclear neutrophils l(PMNs), measured with chemiluminescence, was used to determine whether pulsed electric current (PEC) might regulate the NADPH oxidase activity and participate in restoring its activity in the X chromosome-linked form of CGD patients' PMNs. Five minutes of PEC treatment caused no significant changes in normal and CGD PMNs activity. Unlike normal PMNs, the CGD PMNs exposed to PMA, showed no significant alteration of activity relative to nonexposed control cells. Activation of the OB in normal PMNs with the PMA & PEC was 51 percent higher than in solely PMA treated PMNs. The CGD PMNs were unable to generate oxygen derivatives after exposure to the combined PMA & PEC treatment. This confirms that the PEC effect is based on the regulatory mechanisms of oxidase activity rather than on changes in the molecular structure.
