Abstrakt | We stuied a consecutive series of 46 nondiabetic men with hyperinsulinaemia due to hypertension, who were referred to our clinic for evaluation of ventricular and supraventricular ectopic beats. A group of 42 men with normal insulin served as control. Fasting insulin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. The frequency of ectopic beats was assessed by 24 hours Holter monitoring. A positive correlation of fasting insulin with occurence of ventricular (r = 0.495, p less th. 0.05) and supraventricular ectopic beats (r = 0.57, p less th. 0.01) was found. Increased ectopic activity could be explained by several changes induced by hyperinsulinemia, which are potentially arrhythmogenic: enhanced sympathetic activity, increased secretion of catecholamines and interference with several transmembrane exchange systems of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. | |
