Abstrakt		The presence of legal and illegal drugs among primary school pupils must first be detected and than empirically confirmed. Our inquiry among 461 primary school pupils (age 11-15 years) in the Ljutomer region showed smoking and alcohol consumption to be most common in this population, with drug abuse also occurring. Children and adolescents get first experiences with drugs under the influence of their company. At this age they are not yet able to resist peer pressure nor want to differ from others. We should be concerned about the high proportion of children having already consumed alcohol at this age, and even more concerned about the careless public attitude toward alcohol consumption. Children should be prevented from using drugs out of curiosity, informed about the dangers of addiction and advised how to resist peer pressure.
