Abstrakt     Dr. Josip Vošnjak (1834-1911) from Šoštanj was one of our most prominent doctors-politicians. He has studied and graduated at the University of Vienna. At the beginning of the constitutional period in Austria he was zealously engaged in Slovene national movement for political and cultural awakening. He started his activities in Štajerska (Slovenska Bistrica, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Maribor). He cofounded two political newspapers, the Slovenian Literary Society and initiated meetings ("camps") that boasted Slovene national pride. he was a leading personality of the Young Slovene movement, and a votary of liberal ideas. As such he was a respected member of the provinical council of Štajerska and Kranjska region and a member of parliment in Vienna for several decades. In 1872 he moved to Ljubljana and became a head physician in a working camp. As a member of a provinicial medical committee he was involved in its promotion. Dr. Josip Vošnjak was also a writer who dedicated his work to ordinary reader and to more educated ones. He brought realism and social criticism into Slovene drama. He wrote several articles to educate Slovene people. In every aspect he was a creative personality marking the initial period of the Slovene national growth.
