Abstrakt     The emotional and ethical dilemmas of Slovenian intellectuals fighting for their national and political rights in the Austro-Hungarian empire on the eve of the 20th century are the main themes in the literary work of Doctor of Law Ivo Šorli. The Karl-Franz University of Graz was the Alma Mater of many slovenian students. Šorli's novel "This is a man", was written in 1903 when several students joined an informal circle presided by the then student of medicine, Rikard Karba, who graduated in 1903. He was the model person for the hero of this novel. The popularity of R. Karba as illustrated in this novel became a reality in Karba's later life, when he was elected mayor in his home town of Kamnik. After marring the daughter of the town's apothecary Josip Močnik, he studied pharmacy in order to take over the pharmacy after the death of both pharmacists from the Močnik family. Highly esteemed among coleagues, he was a cofounder and first president of the Free Slovenian Pharmaceutical Society founded in 1919. The adjective free denotes the facultativeness and joint membership of both the proprietors and the employees in the pharmacies. Among several professional activities, R. Karba served on the board of eminent professionals preparing the Pharmacopoea jugoslavica prima. The year of its publication, 1933 was also the year of his sudden death.
