| Abstrakt | Chlorhexidine is among the most intensely researched preventive agents in denstistry, second only to fluorides. The review article describes the action, method of application and use of chlorhexidine in caries prevention, endodontics, periodontics and oral medicine. Because of its adverse effects on cells, oral mucosa and skin, it must be used with caution in carefully selected patients. Chlorhexidine is not a panacea for all oral diseases. It is an effective antiseptic agent, to be used in cases where local anatomical conditions preclude adequate mechanical control of dental plaque, or when the patient's immune defense against plaque bacteria is compromised as a result of systemic disease. | |
