Abstrakt     The report presents the result of action research, conducted from 1991 to 1993 on third grade pupils of some elementary schools in Slovenia. The concept of school stress was socioepidemiologically defined, the theoretical base of stress phenomena was determined, and methods for measuring stress were critically evaluated. A battery of questionnaires and measurements applied to the pupil, his or her parents, teacher and school doctor was analytically evaluated. In a pilot study the questionnaires were applied to a small sample. Responses to items were dichotomized, a matrix of Jaccard's similarity measures were computed for all pairs of items, and clustering techniques were applied. Since no clear clusters were found, a preliminary item analysis was performed, assuming only one-dimensional construct was measured by most questions. Alpha reliability of 0.88 was estimatedfor a scale, summing up response from all informants. Some items were worded differently or discarded as a result of low discrimination indices in this pilot study. Replication and standardization in larger representative samples of third and fifth grade pupils in Slovenia is recommended, for which samples were constructed for application in spring 1994. A model for cooperation between physician, teacher, physical education teacher, school counselling team and dietitian was developed in 1993. A blueprint for a programme to cope with school stress was developed, founded on the WHO Healthy school concept. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
