Abstrakt     Haematuria is one of the main reasons for reffering a child to a paediatric nephrology unit, second only to urinary tract infections. Etiology and chlinical manifestations of gross and microscopic haematuria are discussed. The importance of so-called acanthocytes in urine for the diagnosis of glomerular haematuria is stressed. An algorithm is suggested for evaluation. Haematuria is often a source of considerable concern; attention should primarily be given to patients with gross haematuria and to those with associated proteinuria or leucocyturia. It is often not possible to determine the exact cause of microscopic haematuria, and it is more out task to distinguish between the rare cases that require further studies and the majority where the parents can be reassured. Isolated microscopic haematuria carries an excellent prognosis, even when it persist for years.
