Abstrakt     The author was interested in the success of surgical and endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children. From January 1992 155 children (132 girls and 23 boys) with 199 cases of primary VUR grade II.-V., average age 5.4 years, were treated surgically, 46 children underwent surgical correction of 64 primary VUR, grade III.-V.: Cohen reimplantation was performed in 27 VUR, Pollitano-Leadbetter reimplantation in 7, transurethral submucosal injection of collagen was performed. The children were followed-up at an average of 7.5 months after the surgical procedure. Micturition cystography and ultrasound (US) of the urinary tract were performed. Of 64 ureters treated surgically, only 3 (4.7 pct.) corrected using the Gil-Vernet technique, refluxed postoperatively. After the operation 7 patients had recurrent urinary tract infections. No cases of iatrogenic posttreatment obstruction of the ureter were found. After the single injection of collagen VUR was cured in 74 children with 87 VUR (75.7 pct.). Only 10 children had urinary tract infections during the follow-up period. Surgical correction of the primary VUR resulted in a 20 pct. higher rate of cure compare to endoscopic treatment. Nevertheless the subureteral injection of collagen is a very safe and simple method. We are of the opinion that it is possible to correct the majority of low-grade reflux using this method.
