Abstrakt     Due to the contamination of the whole environment of the town and the surrounding area the exposure of the inhabitants by mercury and ionising radiation is very high, due to the equally high content of mercury in the ground. In the "Pront" the Hg content of the ground is up to 900 mg per kg. After the closure of the mine the mercury concentrations in the air in the town still registered 50 to 290 ng per m3, while the mercury content of the drinking water was under 0.1 pikog per l. Mercury concentrations in higher plants in Idrija are still very high (14.6 ng per g dry weight) despite the closure of the mine. Fish from the river Idrijca also still show a high mercury content. In the adult inhabitants of Idrija the major part of mercury had been deposited in the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the kidneys, and the liver; the values in the individual organs are from 3.8 to 60 times higher than in individuals from other, non-contaminated places. The spent ore contains U-238, Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40.
