Abstrakt     Besides other elements of passive safety of motor vehicles (e.g. reinforced passanger cabin, head rest and air bag), the usage of safety belts plays an important role in prevention and allevation of severity of injuries owing to traffic accidents. Only the installation of safety belts is compulsory and specified by legislation, while all the other elements of passive safety depend on vehicle quality. The rate of usage of safety belts among drivers and fellow passengers on Slovenian roads is still low. Revised control in April 1995 in Ljubljana region indicated that the rate of fastened drivers and fellow passengers increased to more than 60 in comparison with nearly 50 in past four years. Such an increase of safety belts usage is mainly the result of more frequent and more severe police control. The effects of preventive work of many other institutions (e.g. educational system, driving schools etc.) in teaching the habit of safety belts fastening are less noticeable.
