Abstrakt		Asthma is a common disease. A typical patient is young nonsmoker. Hallmarks of the disease are eosinophil inflammation, variable obstruction and hyperresponsiveness of airways to nonspecific irritative stimuli. Susceptibility to asthma is genetically determined but expresses itself under influence of environmental factors most important of which are allergens and viruses. A patient with asthma can be free of symptoms. Typical symptoms of asthma exacerbation are breathlessness, cough and wheezing. Diagnosis is confirmed by lung function tests showing variability of obstruction. The disease is chronic but with appropriate management the outcome is good.
