Abstrakt     A systematic extermination of communicable diseases has been present in Slovenia for centuries. In the fight against variola vera, the turning point is the year 1803 when vaccination was first introduced. For the protection of population against communicable diseases, the achievements of modern measures is constantly implemented. In the follow-up of the communicable diseases we can ascertain that some of them, e.g. diphtheria, tetanus neonatorum, poliomyelitis and typhoid fever can no longer be found. But there are still very frequent intestinal diseases and acute respiratory diseases, zoonoses (among them first of all salmonelloses and campylobacteriosis) and in the recent ten-year also borreliosis. Among epidemics, the most frequent are food infections where the main cause for the onset is the unawareness of the population and unadequate hygienic regime. Owing to the nature of communicable diseases, states are interested in defining the obligations by laws and regulations on the domain of population protection. In Slovenia, the first legal regulations concerning the prevention of communicable diseases go back to the beginning of the 18th century. A new law on communicable diseases is about to be passed. Follow-up of communicable diseases and their control should receive much attention also in the future.
