Abstrakt     Background. Cigarette smoking is the most important preventable cause of death and a major risk factor in numerous chronic diseases. Methods. Smoking-attributable fractions (SAFs) and smoking-attributable mortality and hospitalizations in Slovenia in the year 1990 for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and digestive diseases for adults over 35 years of age were calculated. For four pediatric dignoses smoking-attributable mortality and hospitalizations attributed to maternal smoking during pregnancy for children under one year of age determined. Results. An estimated 3572 deaths and 15565 hospitalizations resulted from cigarette smoking, i.e. 19.9 percent of total hospital admissions among the patients of the same age groups. Conclusions. Smoking is an important cause of mortality and hospitalizations in Slovenia. Calculation of the impact of smoking and associated diseases on the health status of the population can be used to guide preventive intervention strategies.
