Abstrakt     Institute for Health Protection in Rijeka (R Croatia) has been running mortality statistics in the frame of social medicine for many years. The data about mortality on the domain of county Primorje-Gorski Kotar are obtained from the reports and certificates of death, which are filled in by physicians-coroners. Physician-codist codifies the causes of death according to ICD classification. In this work a series of incorrectnesses has been observed that can be devided into three main groups: unsatisfactory examination of dead person and as a consequence a registering of incorrect diagnosis of the cause of death, unadequate and inacurate filling in of the deceased person data on the death report and certificate and an incorrect circulation of forms in medical stationary establishments. In up- to-the-present work the lacking data have been obtained via telephone or through direct contact, but the number of incorrectly filled in forms is increasing and calls for necessary instructions in the services performing coroner's work at the Institution for emergency medical service of Rijeka and at the University medical centre of Rijeka. Observed is a great number of following diagnoses: heart failure, myocardiopathy, cardiac arrest, aterosclerosis in as much as 44,5 percent cases at coroner's work of Emergency medical service in comparison with 8,8 percent cases of the registered cited diagnoses at coroner's work of University medical centre. These are obviously spare diagnoses for all the cases where the real cause of death can not be established with certainty. At University medical centre of Rijeka the problem presents also the fact that the official coroner as a rule does not even examine the dead person, but only signs the death certificate on the base of an attestation filled in by the physician who has treated the deceased person.(trunc.)
