Abstrakt     AIDS and HIV surveillance is essential for planing, implementing and monitoring the programme for prevention and control of AIDS. The data on AIDS and HIV infection cases are collected, analysed and interpreted at the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia. Notification is a legal obligation. By September, 30 1994 a cumulative total of 37 AIDS cases were reported (34 male and 3 female). During the period from 1986 to 1993, yearly AIDS incidence rates varied between 0.5 to 3.5 cases per million. The majority of male cases resulted from sex with other men. In addition, 51 HIV infection cases without developed AIDS were reported. From January, 6 1986 till the end of 1993, altogether 816700 donated blood units were tested for anti-HIV antibodies and 10 donors were detected positive (1,25 per 100000 donations). AIDS and HIV infection epidemics are both in a very early stage. Although in Slovenia there are groups practising high risk behavior for HIV infection, unprotected sex and sharing equipment for injecting ilegal drugs, an extensive spread of HIV infections has not occured so far in any of them, according to available information.
