Porodnica in partner postaneta mati in oče. Vsi intervjuvani so podali informirano soglasje k sodelovanju v raziskavi. Rezultati: Pri analizi intervjujev smo prepoznali glavno kategorijo - skupno doživljanje poroda z vidika porodnice/partnerja. Introduction: Childbirth is a unique event in every individual's life. It strongly affects the woman giving birth as well as her partner. Preparation of the birthing mother and her partner for childbirth is very important, and can affect the process of labour itself. With childbirth, it is not only that a child is being born, but the social roles in the family are formed as well. At that point, the woman giving birth and her partner become mother and father. The purpose of our research is to survey the shared experience of childbirth from the point of view of the woman giving birth and the partner. Methods: Our research was based on the qualitative research paradigm and the method of description. We used a half-structured interview with 8 questions. The questions were formed on the basis of given literature. We have used a non-accidental, purposive pattern. Four pairs of people were included in the research (4 birthing mothers and their partners), all of whom had the experience of childbirth and have met the pre-selected criteria: they only had one child, and the child was not older than five years. We have carried out the interview with each parent individually. All the interviewees have given their consent for taking part in the research. Results: By analyzing the interviews we determined the main category - the shared experience of childbirth from the points of view of the birthing mothers and their partners. We also determined subcategories, which were: "pre-labour", "mid-labour" and "post-labour". Within the subcategories we have also set codes, which are connected to them. The main finding of our research is that the birthing mothers are experiencing labour differently than their partners. Even the birthing mothers themselves differ from each other in their experiences concerning childbirth, and so do their partners. Gaining the information about childbirth and the company at birth is mainly in the domain of the birthing mother; however, interest in the subject is shown by their partners as well. The expectant mothers start preparing for childbirth later than their partners. The women giving birth think that their partner's role in the process of childbirth is only psychological support, whereas their partners say that their support of the birthing mother in the delivery room is both psychological and physical. Satisfaction of birthing mothers and their partners with the treatment of the medical staff during labour is mutual. The birthing mothers and their partners are generally speaking more satisfied with the treatment by the midwife than they are with the treatment by the doctor. Discussion: We have discovered that the women and their partners prepare for the childbirth differently and that they comprehend labour and the whole labour-experience in different ways. The birthing mothers perceive the whole experience more as an emotional event, whereas their partners see it more as a physical experience. All of the interviewees think that labour is an emotional experience which marks both parents' lives.
