Abstrakt     In the study 253 patients with scrotal disease are presented. The patients were treated in Department of Urology of University Medical centre Ljubljana and were referred by urologist to Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology for ultrasound examination of scrotum for precise imaging evaluation of clinically diagnosed or suspected scrotal disease. The purpose of the study was to collet and to evaluate some general data and ultrasound data of a characteristic diagnostic morphologic features of scrotal disease in order to access the role of ultrasound in improving the diagnostic quality of scrotal disease on the basis of which the appropriate therapy can be started. The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis accessed before ultrasound, and the accuracy of the diagnosis accessed by ultrasound, were compared with final diagnoses. The final diagnosis was established by surgical macroscopic findings and / or histopathologcal examinations in operated patients, and by clinical and ultrasound follow up in patients who had no surgery. Diagnostically significant ultrasound features of scrotal disease were accessed only for a group of patients in which the clinical, the ultrasound, and the final diagnoses were identical. Evaluationof medical and therapeutic decision before and after ultrasound examination according to the analysis of the degree of necessity of surgical therapy was graphically presented by ROC curve for all patients, and separate for the group of patients with inflammatory scrotal disease and for the group with tumor and that in all cases where the clinical, the ultrasound, and the final diagnoses were identical. By comparison of the areas under ROC curves for the diagnoses before and the diagnoses after ultrasound examination, the benefit of ultrasound examination was objectively and quantitatively accessed.(Abstract truncated)
