Abstrakt     Introduction: T2 mapping is a quantitative magnetic resonance imaging method for estimating the degrees of knee cartilage and meniscus damage. A T2 map, which presents the spatial distribution of relaxation times, is calculated from a series of T2 weighted images. Non-damaged articular cartilage and meniscus have shorter T2 relaxation time than damaged tissue does. Purpose: This study aimed to defi ne reference values of T2 relaxation time for non-damaged and damaged knee-joint cartilage and meniscus for a Philips Achieva 3.0 T TX magnetic resonance scanner. Methods: With the defi ning of regions of interest on various coloured parametric maps, the average T2 relaxation times were calculated. Sixty-six measurements of T2 relaxation time were made for the meniscus region and 131 measurements for the cartilage region of the knee. T2 values were measured in diff erent regions of interest on articular cartilage and meniscus. All values were arranged in a table, and a statistical analysis was made. Results and discussion: The T2 relaxation time of nondamaged meniscus is 14.71 ms, grade II 22.25 ms and grade III 25.42 ms. The average T2 relaxation time of non-damaged articular cartilage on the patella is 37.30 ms, on damaged 56.42 ms. The T2 relaxation time of non-damaged kneejoint articular cartilage on the femur is 40.49 ms and on damaged 59.23 ms. The average T2 relaxation time of nondamaged knee-joint articular cartilage on the tibia is 23.37 ms. Statistically signifi cant diff erences between the values of T2 relaxation times comparing non-damaged and damaged tissues were proven. Conclusion: Reference values can be used for discovering early damage of meniscus and articular cartilage on the mentioned magnetic resonance scanner.
