Abstrakt     IBR/IPV is regarded a disease that may significantly impair cattle production. Some published economic effects of major importance are: reduction in milk production, impaired reproductive performance, abortions, lower weight gain, mortality, emergence of treatment costs, additional labor costs, trade restriction costs. The literature offers two main IBR/IPV infection elimination methods: vaccination and culling out seropositive animals, and stamping-out without previous vaccination. The objective of this paper is the analysis of costs and benefits of vaccination and eradication of IBR/IPV infection on Slovenian dairies of black and white cows. The modified Markov chain models were used to predict the number of large seropositives and seronegatives. According to the results, a five-years period is necessary to eradicate the infection. In total 8737 animals are expected to be vaccinated during the five-years period at the total cost of the vaccination/eradication program of 451,281 DM. The benefits of the program would break even with the costs in the sixthy year after the onset of the program and would be twice as large as the costs in the tenth year. The net present value of the program is 273,773 DM, the benefit/cost ratio is 1.68, while the internal rate of return is 0.30. The total costs of IBR/IPV eradication vary with the IBR/IPV initial prevalence rate in non-linear manner.
