Abstrakt     Seismicity of a territory could be defined by the frequency and space distribution of past earthquakes and by distribution of the released seismic energy. As the areas and time periods of frequent earthquake do not allways coincide with the occurrence of large earthquake frequency in Slovenia, Ljubljana and Brežice area. The largest energy release has taken place in the regions of Idrija and Ljubljana where the two strongest historic earthquakes have been registered. Idrija earthquake (1511) is deemed by far the biggest event with the epicenter in Slovenia. Its magnitude estimate is 6.5. The second one is Ljubljana earthquake (1895) with the magnitude close to 6.0. The basic mechanism of earthquake generation in Slovenia is the compression of three large geological units (Adriatic, Alpine, and Panonic), caused by convergence of Africa and Europe. The resulting regional stress field shows compresion approximately in the north-south direction. The stress is released along geological faults, thus generating earthquakes. Great uncertainties in earthquake epicentre determination and a rather limited knowledge of active faults in Slovenia do not allow to assign earthquakes to particular faults. Therefore, seismic hazard estimations and maps have been mainly based on past seismic activity. Seismic hazard maps of Slovenia show areas of different hazard levels. The highest seismic hazard has been estimated in Ljubljana and Brežice are. The lowest hazard has been found in the north-eastern part of Slovenia, in Koper region, and in Kočevje region.
