Abstrakt     Within the scope of the project entitled Elements of a Uniform Health Information system (EUHIS) in the Republic of Slovenia, the needs for specialized medical information in the performance of secondary- and tertiarylevel health activities were defined on the state level, including the uniform methodology to be used in the collection of such data. These will serve as a basis for the keeping of accurate and comparable statistical data on patients treated in specialist outpatients'departments and hospitals. The main objective in determining the minimal set of data was to ensure uniform definitions, nomenclatures, classifications and codes. Enormous differences were found to exist among experts of individual medical fields as regards the extent of data which needs to be kept on the state level. It was also found that inadequate definitions and nonuniform codes were used in collecting the majority of data. In formulating definitions of the minimal set of data and determining the codes to be used in the collection of such data, the opinions of experts in various fields of the medical profession, the findings of other work groups within the scope of the EUHIS project and the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the European Union were taken into consideration.
