Abstrakt     On the ceremony of celebrating the 51st anniversary of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia, our medical literature was enriched by this new book thatupgrades the knowledge of skin therapy. The skin is permanently exposed todifferent environmental factors and is a mirror of internal diseases. The understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of dermatologic diseases as well as specific therapy of these diseases has considerably improved in the last decades. This book points to the many new concepts in dermatologic therapy. The book has been written by an interdisciplinary team of 54 experts in various specialties from Croatia, Europe, America and Australia, together withmembers of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia. The editor has donegreat work by excellently harmonizing all the contributions in all aspects. The first section contains chapters on dermatotherapy: basic principles of pharmacology; personalized medicine as it affects dermatology; safety of dermatologic drug therapy; special pharmacology-pharmacoeconomics; principles of corneotherapy; drugs as promoters and initiators of skin tumors;the Erivance trial (treatment of advanced basal cell carcinoma with vismodegib); dermatologic drug therapy in children; management of sexually transmitted diseases and other genitourethral diseases; and dermatologic drugsduring pregnancy and lactation. The second part of this valuable book brings the latest concepts on systemic and topical drugs in dermatotherapy: antibiotics, antihistamines, drugs used with ultraviolet or visible light; laser therapy and drugs; biological therapeutics; antiandrogens and androgen inhibitors; topical corticosteroids; and calcineurin inhibitors. Special chapters are dedicated to the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, use of corticosteroids in autoimmune blistering diseases and atopic eczema. The third and fourth sections deal with adverse drug reactions and pathomechanisms of adverse drug reactions, with special chapters on serious adverse effects of systemic drugs and complications of dermatologic therapies.Related to the pathomechanisms of adverse drug reactions, there are descriptions of drugs such as haptens, antigens and immunogens. Special chapters bring descriptions of toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS syndrome, as well as HIV drug therapy and hypersensitivity reactions. The fifth part of the book is of great importance for clinicians ofdifferent specialties for describing clinical manifestations of adverse drugreactions: urticaria and anaphylaxis due to penicillins and cephalosporins, allergy to quinolones, hypersensitivity reactions to iodinatedcontrast media, maculopapular drug reactions and allergic vasculitis, drug induced pemphigus, drug induced nephritis, and drug induced aspirin and other NSAIDs reactions. The last two sections deal with the diagnosis of drug hypersensitivity and desensitization, containing chapters onapproaching patients with drug hypersensitivity, skin drug tests, and in vitro tests for T-cell mediated drug hypersensitivity. The two chapters on desensitization describe the options for desensitization to antibiotics, chemotherapeutics and biologicals, as well as specific immunotherapy in atopicdermatitis. The book is richly illustrated with 58 tables, 29 photos, 28schemes and 3 histograms, along with abundant recent literature of about 1300 items. In the appendix, there is a list of 117 disease abbreviations and terms, and a list of 54 coauthors with their functions and affiliations. This book is a final product of the efforts and cooperation of an extraordinary team, making significant contribution to our modern medical literature.
