Abstrakt     Background. Lamisil (terbinafine hydrochloride) is an orally and topically active antifungal drug of the allylamine class. It exerts a potent fugicidal activity against dermatophytes; against some yeasts it can be fungicidal, and fungistatic against others. We determined the effectiveness of Lamisil in an open clinical trial in a group of patients with onychomycosis, tinea pedis and manus, and also in Microsporum canis infection. Methods. A total of 95 patients with dermatophyte infections, including 50 patients with tinea unguium, 20 with chronic tinea pedis and unguium, 5 with tinea pedis and manus, and 20 with tinea microsporica were treated with Lamisil. The diagnosis was confirmed by microscopic examination and culture. Patients with tinea unguium and tinea pedis were treated orally for 12 weeks, while those with tinea pedis and manus only for 4 weeks. Patients with Microsporum infection received Lamisil (oral and topical) until negative clinical and laboratory findings were obtained. Results. The majority (45/75) of patients with tinea pedis/manus and tinea unguium were infected with Trichophyton rubrum and 30 with Trihophyton mentagrophytes. In the group of patients with Microsporum infection Microsporum canis was isolated in all cases. Very good clinical and mycological results after 6 to 12 weeks of therapy with Lamisil tablets were evident in majority of patients with onychomycosis and after 4 weeks in patients with tinea pedis and manus. Lamisil was also effective in patients with Microsporun canis infection, where the time to complete healing was longer as in previous groups. Conclusions. The analysis of 95 patients with dermatophyte infection, treated with Lamisil, demonstrates that lamisil is an effective antifungal drug. It is parcitularly effective for the treatment of onychomycosis.
