Abstrakt | Normal and limited joint motion depends both on anatomical determinants of the joint, as well as on various extraarticular factors. There is considerable variation in normal extreme movements of different individuals. Clinical practice puts great emphasis on determination of active motion, which includes evaluation of muscular status. On the other hand, medico legal reports primarily rely on information about residual passive motion. The patient's will could affect passive motion only to a minimal extent. In view of the multitude of tables giving normal range of joint motion (Kendall, Hoppenfeld, Kapandja, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons), the examiner must select and consistently use one table and note the measurements accordingly. In measuring limitations of motion, the examiner should use the unaffected extremity or side of the body as a basis of comparison, whenever possible. | |
