Abstrakt     Statistically, the percentage of traffic participants, who caused road accidents, while driving under the influence of alcohol, is small. In the period among 1980 and 1990 it was in the range 4.1 to 11.8 percent. However, this is true only partially. The official data in causes of road accidents do not account the cases, in which alcohol was has been a side factor, while something else has been established as the cause of accident. When both aspects are considered, alcohol levels of more than 0.5 g/kg were present in 25.8 percent of traffic participants who caused a road accident in 1989 in Slovenia. Therefore, a large scale operation was performed by the Police and mass media in 1990. Altogether, 71371 drivers were tested for the presence of alcohol. In 4148 drivers illegal levels were discovered. The evaluation of the outcome of the operation has shown, that the percentage of traffic participants with illegal alcohol levels, who caused road accidents, has come down to 19.6 percent. Other indicators have been affected as well. The number of road accidents with fatal outcome accompanied by alcohol fell by 11.1 percent, there were 11.8 percent less road accidents, 11.8 percent fewer casualties and 6.7 percent less dead. Similar measures for increasing traffic safety and decreasing the number of drivers under the influence of alcohol have also been applied in 1991.
