Abstrakt		Background. A case of successful management of acute suicidal strychnine poisoning in a 72-year-old female, 45 minutes after the ingestion of a teaspoon of powdered poison (c. 3000 mg.) is described. Results. Toxicological testing confirmed the presence of strychnine in blood and urine, while in gastric aspirate the poison was no longer detectable. The patient's history as well as the course and the outcome of the poisoning are presented along with a brief review of pharmacokinetics, mechanisms, signs and treatment of strychnine poisoning. Conclusions. The patient survived although she developed convulsions, apnoea, severe metabolic acidosis, and lost consciousness.
Izvleček		Izhodišča. Opisan je primer uspešnega zdravljenja zastrupitve s strihninom 45 minut po zaužitju čajne žličke samomorilnega strupa v prahu (pribl. 300 mg). Rezultati. Toksikološke preiskave so potrdile prisotnost strihnina v krvi in urinu, medtem ko ga v želodčnem izpirku ni bilo več. Prikazan je tudi kratek pregled dosedanjega znanja o farmakodinamiki, mehanizmu delovanja, diferencialni diagnozi in terapiji zastrupitve s strihninom. Zaključki. 72-letna bolnica je preživela kljub nastopu toničnih krčev, izgubi zavesti, prenehanja dihanja in metabolni acidozi.
