Abstrakt     Infection with certain types of human papillomaviruses is intimately linked with benign and malignant squamous epithelial cell lesions of the lower genital tract in both sexes. This relationship can be appreciated at many levels, as demonstrated by a wealth of molecular, experimental, morphological and clinical data. Despite the extensive research, the role of human papillomavirus infection in the etiology of similar epithelial cell lesions of the upper part of respiratory and digestive tract remains obscure. The purpose of the present review is to summarize the present knowledge of human papillomavirus infection and epithelial neoplasms of the larynx and esophagus, and to briefly present the results of human papillomavirus studies done in Slovenia.
