Abstrakt     Work develops organs, work maintains organs, work slows down the processes of aging. These are basic truths from which the science of physical education and sport developed. The biological discovery that work develops organs is valid not only for the muscles, the heart, blood vessels, and the respiratory system, but also for the brain. Only the individual who is active in all the facets of life, who lives a dynamic life, constantly learns and is also physically active in sports and recreation, stays fit, healthy, and productive in old age. "A healthy spirit in a heal body" is not only a gift inherited from our ancestors but it is, to a great extent, dependent on lifestyle. In the developed countries there will be more elderly persons (people of over 60 years of age) than teenagers in the next century. Up to the present physical education and sports were planned only younth and for those in their best years (topmost sports!). In the future it will be necessary to consider preventive and recreational needs for the aging and the old. Since life expectancy is icreasing those over ninety years of age will no longer be as rarity. We must provide them opportunities to become accustomed to a healthier way of life and to engage in some physical activities in the form of walking, adapted gymnastics and sport every day and in all seasons.
