Abstrakt     It is very difficult to differentiate between the signs of normal aging and the physical conditions which signify the presence of a disease. This article describes the changes that are common companions of aging, and are therefore grouped among the normal signs of aging. Older people view these changes in various ways and accept them as normal or as a disease condition. Two research studies are mentioned in the article which were conducted on the territory of Slovenia. The first study showed, among other things, that older subjects predict their health status better then the experts and that the most common health problems of the subjects of this research were hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, diseases of the respiratory system, and rheumatic diseases. The second research study established two important conditions as reasons for visits by the elderly to the general practitioner: the most common complains were problems related to locations of pain, and then, various diseases. Problems with neighbours, relatives, and economic and mental problems were also important. The results of above-mentioned research show the complexity of the health problems of the elderly and point out that it is necessary for the personal physican to treat the older person in a wholistic sense, not only in view of the presence or absence of physical diseases and the related problems. It is also important for the personal physician to be aware of the constraints the patient faces in regard to the practice of activities of daily living (ADL) in a narrower (ADL-N) and broader (ADL-B) sense of the word. Among the ADL-N are: dressing, putting on shoes, personal hygiene, nutrition and independence with administration of medications. Among the ADL-B are: various houskeeping matters, use of public institutions and public transportation, and social contacts with the surroundings.(trunc.)
