Abstrakt     The purpose of this paper to explain the need for a broader approach to the solution of the problems of the aging population. In recent years the public is becoming more and more aware of the need for the balanced development of all regions of Slovenia. The negative consequences of rural depopulation and the simultaneous aging of the population in demographic exodus areas are becoming more and more evident. Clear development goals are needed especially at the present time when it appears that the most important criterion in various spheres of life and work are economic efficiency. When speaking about a balanced regional development a deper evaluation of the problems is necessary. However, this assessment could not be done efficiently with evailable quantitative indicators. It is no doubt that various measures are necessary to directly or indirectly contribute to the general welfare of the population of all regions of Slovenia. When the aging population is considered, it is important to keep in mind that genuine solidarity is needed and not only assistance to those in need. Measures that will alleviate certain negative situations are needed, as well as improved coordination between legislation and institutions. As we are convinced that it is necessary to guarantee equitable conditions for life and work for all population gropus, it is no doubt that in all parts of Slovenia favourable conditions must be created to promote the harmonic development of natural and human resources. Only when these conditions are met will young people cease to emigrate from the so-called "exodus areas." These measures will also contribute to the alleviation of problems of the aging population. At the end of this paper some typical statistical indicators are presented.
