Abstrakt		Over the period 1991-1994, the proportion of macrolide antibiotics used in out-patients in Slovenia went-up by nearly three times from 4,8 percent to 12,7 percent of all prescriptions for antibiotics. The author describes the spectrum of activity of macrolides, the advantages of new macrolides which are registered in Slovenia, the mechanisms of action and resistance, the main pharmacologic properties and adverse reactions to macrolides. Clinical indications for the use of macrolide antibiotics are presented separately. Macrolides should be prescribed as rationally as other antibiotics in order to prevent an increase in resistance among certain bacteria.
