Abstrakt		Prescribed pharmaceuticals are one of the indispensable constituents in the treatment process and one of the basic rights and components of health insurance throughout the word and also with us. The development of pharmaceutic industry caused the increase of both supply and demond, and costs of drugs were becoming an ever more important item for health insurance companies. The problem of how to limit the expenditures of public finances for pharmaceuticals is present practically in all the countries. The most frequent model used in European countries is the classification of pharmacies on the list and accordingly the definiton of different amounts of participation of insurees. Financial indicators concerning the financial management of Institute for Health Insurance of Slovenia in 1994 in Slovenia ogain stimulated considerations about possible measures for the reduction of expenditures on pharmaceuticals. Measures already accepted or in preparation are as follows: 1. Institute sent all the physicians who in 1994 prescribed more prescriptions as is the estimated average for individual speciality, a letter in which they were asked to explain the reasons for deviations in drug prescription. This action did not give the wanted results. 2. The assembly of the Institute obliged the Institute service to follow-up the consumption of pharmaceuticals and to propose the measures in the case of ascertained deviations in collaboration with Medical Chamber. 3. On the basis of valid legislation the Institute has one more possibility. It can propose to the assembly of the Institute to adopt the additional payment covering full value for the drugs from the intermediate list. 4. Measures adopted by the Institute by now are of a shorterm character. In order to solve this problem completely, the preparations for a new classification of pharmaceuticals into lists which will link up costs and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals have already started.
