Abstrakt     The purpose of the study was to establish by an observation over a longer period of time how patients and their caretakers experience permanent disability which occurs in patients older than 50 who for the first time in thier life have a stroke and to establish a model of social support to families which take care of their relatives with permanent disability as a result of stroke. The survey was performed on the basis of two questionnaires prepared in the London School in Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, which were translated and adapted for slovenia conditions. The Questionnaire for Patients includes 170 questions, while the Questionnaire for the Main caretaker includes over 200 questions. In addition to demographic questions, both questionnaires contain questions on health, social-economic characteristics and depression. The majority of the questions in the Questionnaire for Patients are related to their everyday activities and knowledge of services available to them as part of social support. Between 160 and 200 patients were registered; 80 of them were surveyed, but only 30 questionnaires of patients and their caretakers were suitable for statistical analysis due to difficulties in surveying. A pilot study of the 30 cases shows only the basic picture of the problem; the number of surveyed persons was too low provide a statistical verification of the problems. It was established that patients need the help of other persons for two to three months following discharge from the hospital, above all in personal hygiene and everyday activities, necessary for independent living. Depressive syndromes appear frequently. The results of the first study show that these patients and their caretakers are not informed of the existing services to which they could turn for help, so that they do not even take the opportunity to use them. abstract troncated at 2000 characters.
