Abstrakt     The interaction between antimicrobial agents and various components of the immune system is an area of active research. Most studies concerning have used erythromycin, but newer macrolides are also being explored. Azithromycin azalide represents a remarkable new drug, with new concepts concerning the pharmacokinetic properties of antimicrobial agensts. The immunomodulatoly effects of azithromycin are a matter of growing interest. Azithromycin does not impair the immune response: on the contrary, it may even beneficially influence the immune system, which is an important property, especially for immunocompromised individuals. In this review article are described the results some of these explorations - the effects of a therapeutic dose of azithromycin, given orally, on the proliferative lymphocite, response to pokeweed mitogen, the level of immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgA and IgM in serum and the amount of the soluble interleukin 2 receptors in supernatants of phytohemagglutinin and phorbol myristrate acetate - stimulated mononuclear cell cultures.
