Abstrakt     Health, morbidity, mortality and disability are not evenly distributed among population groups. People with the lowest socioeconomic status are exposed to the greatest health hazards. These populations include low income groups, the long-term unemployed, people with low educational level, migrant workers and mentally disordered individuals. They have in common high exposure to health hazards, high level of negative health, and at the same time limited accessibility to health promotion. Being a member of a socially depriviliged group implies to have a job with increased exposure to occupational health hazards, or to be unemployed because of the lack of knowledge and skills required to cope and keep pace in the highly competitive society of today. Poor economic standards and financial constraints have an important impact on the life cycle of the individual and his family. Bad housing and nutrition, low level of social security, low educational level, life on the fringe of the society, unhealthy lifestyle patterns, poverty and high morbidity, all these are the elements that constitute the vicious circle of reproduction and negative health of these socially disadvantaged groups. Health status depends to a great extent on the availability and accessibility of goods and services provided by the state. The level of affordability of these services, however, varies from one population group to another. Since health constitutes the basis of effective and productive work and life of each individual, and at the same time the best investment in the prosperous future of a country, special attention should be focused on the promotion of health among people with low income and unemployed, which account for 13.5% of the Slovene population. Therefore, the emphasis needs to be on global policies and strategies to promote equity in health at the national level.(abstract truncated) at 2000 characters.
