Abstrakt		The paper is conceived as a survey of the activities going on at the Department of Paediatrics of Maribor General Hospital since its beginnings up to the present. The Department's scientific research, educational, personnel and capacity aspects are analysed to fully assess its significance as the centre of child health care in NE Slovenia, alongside municipal paediatric disspensaries and outpatient clinics. Due to lack of medicohistorical literature on the development of paediatrics in Maribor and the Slovenian health care in general, the most important material studied and partly statistically analysed are the Department' s Annual Reports for 1958 -1994. In the half-century of its existence, the Department of Paediatrics in Maribor has developed into a modern hospital department, noted for its expertise and successeful treatment of various children diseases. Once the most important successes achieved by its numerous expert staff was the allergological service and chronical patient care, today it is the Intensive Care Unit alongside other paediatric subspecialties.
