Abstrakt     The aim of the study was to detect and follow some personality characteristics in children and adolescents (schoolchildren) with essential hypertension. The experimental group was made up of 86 schoolchildren with essential hypertension aged 7-19. The control group was made up of 86 normotensive schoolchildren who were matched with the experimental group in pairs. The information was collected by a child clinical psychology specialist with the help of a standardized adapted interview and questionnaire. Personality characteristics such as hypersensitivity, introversion, ambitiousness, competitive behaviour, neurotic attitude and anxiety appeared statistically significantly more frequently in the experimental than in the control group. It is the authors opinion that schoolchildren with essential hypertension have certain personality characteristics which are connected and most probably represent a complex of constitution. This complex might be compared with type A coronary-prone behaviour pattern in adults. The frequency of hypertensitivity, introversion and ambitiousness in 42 after 10 years still hypertensive individuals was statistically significantly lower than in the beginning of the study. In contrast, the frequency of competitive behaviour, neurotic attitude and anxiety was not significantly different. It is speculated that competitive behaviour, neurotic attitude and anxiety can be ranked among the main personality characteristics in children, adolescents and young adults with essential hypertension.
