Abstrakt		Ten years ago, a relatively small number of complications related to longlasting intubation of mechanically ventilated patients were reported, which rendered the need for tracheomoty questionable. In the last five years, however, the indications for tracheomoty have been slightly extended. it has been found that the average duration of intubation prior to tracheotomy was 17,8 days, whereas 13 years ago it was 27 days. The dilemma remains to be resolved.
Izvleček		Pred desetimi leti so poročali o relativno nizkem številu zapletov po dolgotrajni intubaciji bolnikov, ki so bili umetno ventilirani. Potreba po traheotomiji je postala vprašljiva. V zadnjih petih letih so se indikacije za traheotomijo nekoliko razširile. ugotavljamo, da so bolniki pred traheotomijo v povprečju intubirani le 17,8 dni, za razliko izpred trinajstih let, ko je bila povprečna doba intubacije 27 dni. Dilema pa ostaja.
