Abstrakt     The definition and classification of gastritis is confused and the term should not be used without proper difinition. Endoscopists often describe mucosal abnormalities in the stomach as "gastritis", but the endoscopic appearances correlate poorly with histopathological findings. Clinicians sometimes diagnose "gastritis" as causing dyspepsia in tne absence of a focal lesion, but even severe gastritis may be present in asymptomatic individuals. In parallel with the histological Sydney division, the severity of the various features of endoscopic gastritis are graded as absent, mild, moderate, or severe. Different types of endoscopic appearances are described.
