Abstrakt     Hyperplastic polyps are the most frequent type of gastric polyps and appear from 75 to 80%. They are usually multiple and rarely turn malignant. The aims of the study were to determine the biological potential of hyperplastic polyps in our archival matherial, to assess the percentage of their malignant transformation and to find those prognostic factors which might be helpful in predicting the outcome of the disease. Material and Methods. During l984-1993 409 hyperplastic polyps were diagnosed at the Institute of pathology in Ljubljana. Dysplastic changes were expredssed in 55 (13,4%) and malignant transformation in seven (1,7%) hyperplastic polyps. 15 hyperplastic polyps were included in the present study: seven without dysplastic changes, two with dysplasia and six with malignant transformation. Immunohistochemical detection of proliefrative marker Ki-67 as well c-erbB-2 oncogene product was performed in all selected cases. In 5 hyperplastic polyps with malignant transformation we also performed in situ hybridisation for detection of Epstein-Barr virus RN. Results. We have found that the fraction of proliferative cells as well as the intensity and distribution of positive cytoplasmic staning for c-erbB-2 oncogene product increases with the degree of epithelial dysplasia and is the highest in hyperplastic polyps with malignant positive nuclear staining for Epstein-Barr virus RN in the majority of tumour cells. Conclusions. Immunohistochemical detection of prolfierative activity as well as detection of cerbB-2 oncogene product might be an additional too in assessing hyperplastic polyps with the risk of malignant transformation.
