Abstrakt		Body language has always been of interest to different theorists of communication and expressive behaviour. Most of these studies also included moral and aesthetic judgments. In ancient times the interpretation of gestures was considered to be a part of rhetoric. They deserved a special consideration, however, since the gestural sign system was thought to be different from the verbal one. The public speaker was strictly distinguished from the actor. In the middle ages, analyses of body expression were determined by the ambivalent attitude towards the body which was prevalent. Despite these attitudes, much attention was paid to gestures; above all, their expressiveness, communicativeness and efficiency were studie. New aesthetic and ethical standards have been formed in the modern era, but these, too, are constantly changing. For some time restraint was "popular" in body movements; later it was replaced by expressiveness and sensitivity. Some authors have tried to explain the characteristics of body language using genetic evidence.
