Abstrakt     The diagnostic accuracy of CT and bronchoscopy in evaluating mediastinal masses, especially involvement in lung cancer, has not been totally satisfactory. Bronchoscopic needle aspiration (BNA) was introduced and reported to improve the results in staging of lung cancer (K.P. Wang, Chest, 106, 588-593, Aug. 1994). We report our limited experience in adding BNA to flexible bronchoscopy (FB) for diagnosis of mediastinal masses, malignant and benign. During 1995, in 110 patients with suspected primary lung cancer and mediastinal involvement, the diagnosis was made by bronchoscopy at our Institute. 89 were male, 21 female, their mean age 68.3 years, 10 were nonsmokers. In 93 of these 110 patients the diagnosis was made by BF with forceps biopsy, in additional 17 (15.4%) patients it was made by BNA of mediastinal nodes. 94 patients proved to have lung cancer, 2 had lymphoma. Ten of these 96 had their diagnosis established by BNA (10.3%). Of the 14 patients who had benign disease, 7 had their diagnosis made by BNA (50%): 4 had TB, 3 had inflammatory disease unspecified. These diagnoses were confirmed by follow-up.
